Every September, we celebrate Workforce Development Month to recognize, honor, and publicize the contributions of our nation's workforce development professionals. Throughout the year, we've received countless messages, writeups and articles about your work and the success of your organizations. We're glad to be able to share them as a testament to the innovative and life-changing work of our nation's workforce development boards.
EmployIndy has done exceptional advocacy work throughout this past year! From local to state to federal, they have been a forerunner in advocacy, using all the tools at their disposal and leaning on NAWB whenever we can lend assistance.
We are thrilled to have members in our workforce system so passionately and consistently advocating to their governing counterparts and are equally happy to have been a supporting partner in it.
“NAWB’s advocacy resources have been especially useful as we’ve engaged with our representation. They’ve been very valuable in quickly finding up-to-date information on federal policies and legislation, identifying areas of impact for our local area, and prioritizing which talking points and narratives to share with our congressional delegation. It has definitely helped hone our messaging!” – Senior Director, External Affairs, of EmployIndy, Kevin Duffy
Here are some of the actions that EmployIndy has taken to advocate for their own needs as well as the workforce system writ large.
Local level:
EmployIndy conducted their very first Lunch and Learn for Indianapolis City-County Council members in July, providing them with crucial localized labor market information, sharing updates on their programs (especially those that are city-funded), and gave them a tour of their comprehensive American Job Center (AJC). They are hoping to conduct additional Lunch and Learns for their city county council members in the future.
State-wide:
EmplyIndy has begun bipartisan outreach to their local state legislature delegation by providing two site visits to State Representative Julie McGuire (R) and State Representative Carey Hamilton (D). Both visits were scheduled at their AJC during their weekly hiring event, Wednesdays at WorkOne, which draws over 20 employers and hundreds of jobseekers into the building each week.
In partnership with the Indiana Workforce Board Alliance (INWBA), EmployIndy helped to staff and to represent during INWBA Day at the Statehouse during the legislative session this past spring. This event helped spur conversations that led to their state legislature site visits. EmployIndy also has future endeavors planned, including outreach to the State Senate and House Education Committees for a Lunch and Learn at their AJC.
Federal level:
EmployIndy continues to reach out to their congressional delegation to advocate for workforce development board priorities, including letters on Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act (WIOA) reauthorization, Department of Labor (DOL)[SH1] Apprenticeship rulemaking, and agency appropriations. EmployIndy also hosted two separate site visits this summer for congressional staff:
