Energy Industry Putting DEI Into Action through Pre-Apprenticeship Program
Missy Henriksen, Executive Director, Center for Energy Workforce Development
National Apprenticeship Week is a celebratory milestone that recognizes the endless benefits of apprenticeships and their important role in fueling the workforce, building our economy, and supporting our communities. The Center for Energy Workforce Development (CEWD) is no stranger to advocating for apprentices. CEWD recently announced a strategic partnership with National Urban League to create pre-apprenticeship programs for clean energy jobs, underscoring the positive impact apprentices bring to essential industries like energy.
Through this partnership comes the Urban Energy Jobs Program, which aims to connect hundreds of highly-trained workers from underrepresented populations with clean energy job opportunities in key industry occupations across solar, wind, nuclear, electric, natural gas and other clean energy sectors. The program will operate in five Urban League affiliates: Urban League of Louisiana, Chicago Urban League, Houston Area Urban League, Louisville Urban League, and Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis. The affiliates are responsible for recruitment, intake assessments, eligibility screening services, enrollment, career readiness training, soft skills training, support services, partnership and liaison with pre-apprenticeship and Registered Apprenticeship Program partners, and referral to Registered Apprenticeship Program opportunities.
This special collaboration funnels the National Urban League’s diverse pool of program participants from preparatory training and pre-apprenticeship programs to opportunities in Registered Apprenticeship Programs with energy companies across CEWD’s partnership network. With a focus on those in underrepresented populations, the program is meant to support career development opportunities to ensure the energy workforce is representative of the communities it serves. As outlined in its new DE&I Roadmap for Industry Change, CEWD believes that diversity of experience, backgrounds, and perspectives leads to better outcomes for customers, employees, and communities.
The program aligns with the national initiative to provide people with the skills and training they need to strengthen the workforce and support America’s Clean Energy Future. The partnership between CEWD and National Urban League was recently recognized by President Joe Biden as part of the Infrastructure Talent Pipeline Challenge, a nationwide call to action for employers, unions, education and training providers, states, local governments, Tribes, territories, philanthropic organizations, and other stakeholders to make tangible commitments that support equitable workforce development.
There is no better time than now for industries and employers alike to provide the tools and resources needed to support the development of the talent pipeline. Pre-apprenticeships and apprenticeships are important components of that development.
